Capital Campaign Kicks Off
McIntire alumni and friends gathered April 24, 2003, to kick off “Back to the Lawn: The Capital Campaign for the McIntire School of Commerce.” The gala, held under an enormous tent on the University Lawn, celebrated McIntire’s plans to develop a 135,000-square-foot academic complex at the southeast end of the Lawn. “Back to the Lawn” will also enhance collaboration with the College of Arts & Sciences on numerous dimensions.

University Board of Visitors Approves Schematic Design
On May 23, 2003, the U.Va. Board of Visitors approved the schematic design for McIntire’s new academic complex on the Lawn and recommended that Varsity Hall be relocated to another site. (Varsity Hall is currently located where the addition to Rouss Hall is to be built.)

McIntire Dean Carl Zeithaml and Associate Dean for Administration Gerry Starsia attended the presentation by Hartman-Cox Architects to the Board of Visitors Buildings and Grounds Committee. “We had the opportunity to discuss our project with the committee members and a variety of senior University officials,” Zeithaml said. “The presentation and discussion went very well. These important decisions clear the way for us to proceed.”

Value Engineering Process Under Way
During the summer of 2003, the School made substantial progress on a comprehensive review of the academic complex with respect to all structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems to identify best value options and selections. This value engineering process is designed to confirm the project scope and the initial $50 million budget estimate. This effort involves a variety of challenges, including marrying the timber-framed historic Rouss Hall to the new building.

Construction Firm Selected
In June 2003, McIntire selected construction management firm Gilbane Building Company to oversee construction of the academic complex.

State Design Approval
In October 2003, preliminary designs were submitted to the Assistant State Building Official for initial building code review.

Renovation to Start in 2004
During the spring 2004 semester, Varsity Hall will be removed, and preliminary site preparation behind Rouss Hall will begin. After graduation 2004, construction will begin, including the renovation of Rouss Hall.

Fundraising Ongoing
With the help of many alumni and friends who are committing essential funds, McIntire continues to work toward raising the $50 million goal. Contact Assistant Dean for Development Wayne Smith at 434-982-2820 or wsmith@virginia.edu for information on how you can join this historic effort through a contribution.
