McIntire VPN Instructions


Note: These instructions may not reflect the exact appearance of Windows on your computer due to differences in Windows releases. Removing Previous Versions of the McIntire VPN

  1. Click the Windows Start button, click Control Panel, double-click the Network Connections icon
     

  2. A Network Connections Window Appears


     

  3. If a McIntire VPN connection appears under Virtual Private Network Heading, Right click it and select Delete
     

  4. Close the network connections windows

Installing the McIntire VPN Connection

  1. Click the Windows Start button, click Control Panel, double-click the Network Connections icon
     

  2. A Network Connections Window Appears


     

  3. Click the Create a new connection button
     

  4. Click Next
     

  5. Choose the second radio button, Connect to the network at my workplace and click Next



     

  6. Select the Virtual Private Network connection Radio Button and click next


     

  7. Enter "McIntire VPN" into the Company Name Box and click Next


     

  8. Enter 128.143.40.3 into the Host name or IP address box and click Next


     

  9. Click Next on the Connection Availability option (not pictured)
     

  10. Check the box to add a shortcut to the desktop if you choose and click Finish


     

  11. A connection box will appear.  Enter MCINITRE\USERID (Where USERID is your logon ID) into the User Name Field.
     

  12. Enter your domain logon password into the password box
     

  13. Check the box to save the username and password if you choose


     

  14. Click Connect to connect to the McIntire VPN
     

  15. After a VPN Connection has been established, you can use McIntire resources as if you were in Monroe Hall, such as outlook, sharepoint intranet,  and your F and G drives.

Troubleshooting VPN Connections

Possible Problem What to Check Solution Contact
Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN Connection.  The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection. Are you connected to the internet?  You must have an established internet connection before attempting to connect to the VPN server Connect to the Internet If your internet connection is down, contact your Internet Service Provider
Error 649: The Account does not have permission to dial in You must be a McIntire Faculty, Staff, or Graduate Student to Access the McIntire VPN Server Obtain correct permissions McIntire Helpdesk (434) 924 7988
Error 691: Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain. Check your userID and password carefully.  It is the same information used to log into webmail (https://webmail.comm.virginia.edu) Enter Correct Login Information McIntire Helpdesk (434) 924 7988 if you have forgotten your password
