David C. Burke is a Founder and Managing Director of Makena Capital Management, an investment management firm with $13 billion of endowment assets under management. Prior to forming Makena in 2005, Mr. Burke was a Managing Director of the Stanford Management Company, overseeing the Stanford University endowment’s investments in private equity and venture capital. Prior to joining the Stanford Management Company, Mr. Burke ran the private equity investment program for The Investment Fund for Foundations. From 1996 to 2000, Mr. Burke was an international capital markets lawyer in London and Paris with Linklaters, and prior to that practiced law with Bingham McCutchen in San Francisco. He was a strategy consultant with Strategic Planning Associates, now known as Mercer Management Consulting, prior to graduate school. Mr. Burke has a B.S. in commerce (1988), J.D. (1993), and M.A. in foreign affairs (1994) from the University of Virginia and is a frequent lecturer on investment management topics at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Mr. Burke currently serves on the advisory boards of 25 private equity and venture capital firms in the United States and abroad, and is a board member of Laureate Education Inc. He lives in Atherton, Calif., with his wife, Kelly, and their three children.
