Language Courses
All students for whom English is not their primary language are encouraged to consider taking a class through the Center for American English Language and Culture (CAELC), which offers a number of courses in English as a second language (ESL), listed on the center's Web site.

 

Full-Time Workload
12-15 credits per semester

Exams
Exams are mostly written, but are sometimes conducted orally, or even take-home assignments. Projects may also be required.

Academic Expenses
Because the McIntire School accepts only exchange students, tuition fees are paid to the home University. Other expenses (books, room, board, personal) are estimated here

Textbooks                                                                                                                                    Students can save money on their textbooks by signing up for Amazon Student. The post office is located on the first floor of Newcomb Hall, the student activities building. It is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Getting around UVA & Charlottesville

UTS, UVA's bus system, is free to use. Students who live in the IRC can take the Green Route to the Commerce School, which takes 15-20 minutes.

This bus leaves the Corner for Barracks Road Shopping Center (large shopping area with two grocery stores) and Fashion Square Mall. The CAT is free for university students- just show the driver your ID card.

Traveling outside of Charlottesville

 

Distance from Charlottesville to:

  • Richmond: 71 miles/114.3 km (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes by car)    
  • Washington, D.C: 116 miles/186.7 km (approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes by car)
  • Philadelphia: 255 miles/410.4 km (approximately 5 hours by car) 
  • New York City: 344 miles/553.6 km (approximately 6 hours and 40 minutes by car) 
  • Boston: 560 miles/ 901.2 km (approximately 10 hours and 43 minutes by car) 

Train (Amtrak)

Trains from the Charlottesville Station (CVS) go as far north as Boston and as far south as New Orleans. Take the free trolley to the West Main at 8th St. NW stop. The train station is a short walk from there.

  

Charlottesville Airport

The Charlottesville area is served by four airlines (US Airways, Delta, Northwest, and United), with direct service to New York City, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Charlotte, Washington, Detroit, and Philadelphia. Taxi service is available from the Charlottesville Airport to the University (approximately 10 miles). The Airport Express Taxi (434-465-8294) offers special student rates to the airport.

UVA’s Student Council provides a shuttle to and from the Richmond International Airport during major school breaks. The shuttle costs $20 each way.
