Managing Your User Accounts and Passwords
Your McIntire User ID and Password
What is my McIntire User Account?
As a member of the McIntire community, you are provided with a McIntire user account. It is typically the same user ID as your University account (e.g., abc4d) and is used in conjunction with a McIntire-specific password in order to provide you with access to McIntire services such as McIntire e-mail, Blackboard, services located on this Web site, and access to McIntire's network storage locations.
It is important to recognize that this account, although typically sharing the same user ID as your University account, is entirely separate from your University account and is managed specifically by the McIntire technology team. Your password, although you may set it to be identical with your University account, is nonetheless separate from that account. Therefore, if you experience an issue with your McIntire account, contact the McIntire Help Desk directly instead of the University-wide ITC Help Desk.
How can I change my McIntire password?
The first thing to know about changing your McIntire password is the set of password requirements you need to meet in order to successfully change the password. These requirements have been established to help ensure an appropriate level of security for your account.
Your password must be at least seven digits in length and contain characters from at least three of the four following categories:
- English upper case letters (A - Z)
- English lower case letters (a - z)
- Base 10 digits (0 - 9)
- Non-alphanumeric characters (!, $, %, etc.)
Once you have constructed a password that satisfies the above-listed requirements, you may change your password in any of the following manners:
- Use the online password changing form.
- If you have a McIntire email account, log in to McIntire Webmail and go to Options in the far upper-right. From there, select Change Your Password on the left.
- Log in to any McIntire lab machine using your McIntire login account and press CTRL+ALT+DEL. A window will appear with Change Password as one of the options.
Other UVA Computing Accounts
Students and staff frequently have other computing accounts they need to maintain (e.g., central mail system accounts, UVA Google e-mail accounts, Live@edu accounts, Student Information Services accounts, and any other University service such as Blue Unix). These accounts are not managed by the McIntire technology team. If you experience a problem with one of these accounts, contact the ITC Help Desk.
