Mapping the R and S Drives for Students

If you are a student at the McIntire School of Commerce, you have storage space on the School's network. The network location commonly referred to as the "R drive" is a secure, personal storage area to which only you have access. The S drive, on the other hand, is a common storage area shared by all McIntire students.

If you sign on to a lab machine in Rouss & Robertson Halls, the R and S drives will be automatically mapped for you. Also, if you connect to the VPN from a personal machine, a script should run that will map the drives automatically. However, the drives fail to map properly from time to time, and as a result, you may need to map them manually.

To map the R or S drives, you must first be either physically located within Rouss & Robertson Halls or connected to the VPN. For instructions on how to connect to the VPN, see this page.

Once connected, map the R drive by clicking on the Start button, selecting the Run option, and then typing the following text into the provided text box. If you are using Vista, select the Windows Orb and then type the following text into the search bar directly above the Start Orb:

net use r: \\files.comm.virginia.edu\student-files\UserID

In the example given above, "UserID" is a placeholder for your actual McIntire user ID (e.g., abc4d).

You will likely be prompted for a password and user ID. Simply input as your user name your domain (MCINTIRE), followed by a backslash and then your McIntire user ID so that it appears as follows: MCINTIRE\YourUserID. Your password will then be your standard McIntire password.

You can now navigate to My Computer (or Computer if you are using Vista), and your R drive should now be listed. To map the S drive, return to the same location where you previously entered the drive-mapping command, and enter the following text:

net use s: \\files.comm.virginia.edu\student-shared

Once again, you may be prompted for credentials in order to map this drive. If this occurs, enter the same credentials you used to map the R drive above.  Once this is done, you should see the S drive under My Computer or Computer.
