 International Accounting Experience

Develop Your Global Mindset

One of the most valued characteristics employers look for in a potential candidate is the ability think globally.* McIntire's unique international accounting course, "Special Topics in International Accounting," provides students a better understanding of the complex social, economic, and cultural dynamics affecting today's global business world.

In "Special Topics in International Accounting," students travel to Ireland for a one-week intensive residency and study accounting within an international context. Students work side-by-side on case studies with Irish business students, while taking lectures from such fascinating guest speakers as Nobel Peace Prize honoree John Hume, recognized for bringing peace to the North and South of Ireland; members of the Irish Development Board; and experts on Irish history and current international business issues in Ireland.

Course Description

"Special Topics in International Accounting" begins during the spring term with classes at McIntire and concludes during spring break with a one-week residency in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Topics covered include:

  • International business issues
  • International financial accounting
  • Tax incentives
  • Irish culture
  • Conflict resolution

Students reside at Inch House, a 17th century estate that is Ireland's first dedicated Irish studies center for visiting college and university students. Located at Inch, Lough Swilly, County Donegal, the property includes four acres of gardens and woodlands; the Irish Studies Centre offers year-round programming and accommodations. Additional cost for overseas travel is not included in the M.S. in Accounting Program tuition and fees.

Global Perspective

"The trip to Ireland was an extremely valuable experience from both an academic and a cultural perspective. Not only were we able to study International Financial Reporting Standards in an international environment, but we also got a unique, firsthand look into Irish culture. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I will never forget."
