 International Applicants

International Students

An international applicant is anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident at the time of application to the University of Virginia. The following information is provided to assist international students in the admissions process and to assist admitted students as they transition to the University.

Applying for Admission

International students are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible to allow ample time to apply for a student visa if admitted to the Program. We strongly recommend international students currently studying outside the United States apply by the Dec 1. deadline, allowing an extra 2-4 weeks for applications to be processed.

Credential Evaluation

International applicants currently studying outside of the United States must also submit a professional course-by-course credential evaluation of their transcripts, including any credit earned toward their undergraduate degree. This evaluation must be performed by a professional credential evaluator, with the report sent directly from the evaluator to the McIntire School of Commerce at one of the addresses above. Photocopies and facsimiles of transcripts are not acceptable. A notarized copy of transcripts does not serve as an official academic record. No exceptions are made.

Please note that international applications will not be considered complete without the course-by-course credential evaluation. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the admissions committee.

English Language Test

International applicants must also submit official scores from an English language test. We accept scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). TOEFL scores must be sent to the University of Virginia code 5820. To be competitive, your TOEFL score must be a minimum of 600 (paper-based), 250 (online), or 100 (ibt). IELTS scores must be sent to the McIntire School of Commerce, and your overall score must be a minimum of 7.5.

International students whose first language is not English but who have either completed a four-year undergraduate degree in the United States or completed all undergraduate study in English may request a waiver. Students requesting a waiver must submit by post or email a written request and arrange for an in-person or Skype video interview. Requests should be directed to Cathy Fox.

Financial Guarantee Form

Candidates who accept our offer of admission must complete and submit a Financial Guarantee Form (FGF) and the required supporting financial documentation. Visit http://www.virginia.edu/iso/issp/generalinfo/forms.html for additional information about this requirement.

Foreign Student Advisor Report

International students currently studying in the United States will be required to submit a Foreign Student Advisor Report (FSA) along with their admission acceptance form. Visit http://www.virginia.edu/iso/issp/generalinfo/forms.html for additional information about this requirement.

Transitioning Successfully

We strongly recommend all international students consider taking advantage of a summer language institute offered by the University of Virginia. In-class discussion and participation are a large component of the M.S. in Accounting program. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is an intensive language and culture course designed for non-native speakers of English who have been admitted to an undergraduate or graduate degree program at the University of Virginia. EAP thoroughly prepares international students for McIntire's collaborative learning environment.

Language Consulting Program

The Center for American English Language and Culture provides student language consultants who are native speakers of English interested in getting to know international students, staff, and scholars. Once you arrive at the University of Virginia, they offer opportunities to practice English, learn more about United States culture, and make new friends. Most conversation groups typically consist of one student language consultant and two international students, staff, or scholars. Conversation groups meet one hour per week beginning in September through the final week of classes fall term.

Why McIntire?

"The main reason I came to McIntire was to learn how to work in a team. I knew that working in a public accounting firm required working in teams and McIntire provided the practice I needed to be successful in that environment."
