Financial Assistance

We encourage prospective students to investigate all options available to assist in funding graduate education. The traditional sources of financial aid have changed significantly within the past 5-10 years. Even if you have sought aid within the past year, make sure to research all of your options carefully, pay attention to deadlines, and understand your obligations.

Employer-Based Tuition Assistance

Because the education that students receive in the program directly benefits employers both in terms of employee development as well as retention, the vast majority of students receive some level of assistance from their employers. You may wish to investigate the following:

  • Corporate Tuition Assistance Plans – Your human resources or benefits office should be able to provide you with information on your organization's formal tuition assistance program.

  • Government Employees Tuition Assistance – Unless you are a federal employee participating in a special management or leadership development program, you may find it difficult to get full program funding. However, you may find your department or agency willing to help fund your education on a course-by-course basis.

  • Departmental Funding – Because an individual department or project team often directly benefits from a student's participation in the graduate program, many students have found that they will supplement or in some cases fully fund the cost of the program.

McIntire Departmental Funding

McIntire provides scholarships to incoming students who show exceptional promise to excel in graduate studies. Funding is competitive and based on incoming academic credentials, skills, and work experience. In order to be considered, please complete and submit the following application no later than Feb. 15.

If you wish to be considered for departmental funding, we strongly encourage you to submit both the FAFSA and Accelerated Engineering OR MS/MIT Financial Aid Application. in addition to the department application required.

  • Scholarships and grants

Further information can be found on the University Financial Aid Web site at http://www.virginia.edu/financialaid/gradstudents.php.

Veterans' Benefits – The Registrar's Office is the University liaison with the Veterans Administration in matters concerning education benefits available to veterans and war orphans under the provisions of Chapter 34 and 35 of Title 38 USC (Cold War G.I. Bill). This office provides information and furnishes application forms on request.

Web Resources – The Student Financial Services Office maintains a listing of additional sources of financial aid available.

Private Loans - The Office of Student Financial Services can assist families in understanding basic terms of various programs and how the process works and can identify private programs most often used by other families. However, the office does not make any recommendations; families must make their own decisions based on their financial situation and personal needs.

Residential & International Students Budget

The breakdown below estimates living costs in addition to tuition and fees for international students and others who will be full-time residential students. This budget does not include allowances for car payments, undergraduate debt, or consumer and other types of personal debt. The typical living costs budget is expected to increase by approximately 2.5% for 2008-2009.
