Executive Development Programs

Module I: IT Architecture

GComm 779 & 780 (9 credit hours)

Module Leader: Stefano Grazioli

Module I is taught during a two-week period of full residency on the Grounds of the University of Virginia. This brief but intense technology boot camp will expose you to the McIntire way of looking at information technology, which is based on the philosophy of designing IT systems that meet the needs of the business enterprise and add economic value.

The module has three objectives: (1) to provide you with a long-lasting knowledge of the foundations of modern information systems: data, objects, business processes, and telecommunications; (2) to strengthen your insights on contemporary IT trends and emerging technologies; and (3) to empower you with a big-picture understanding of how these pieces fit together in an enterprise IT architecture.

Topics covered include:

  • Enterprise architectures

  • Object–oriented technologies

  • Data modeling and database design

  • Business process management

  • Data communication and network design

  • Emerging technologies

  • IT security

  • Enterprise Application Integration (EAI)

  • Management and evaluation of IT architectures

Current core technologies used:
 Visual Studio, ErWin, Oracle/SQL, UML/Use cases, XML

Description of projects or assignments include:

  • High-level design of an IT architecture for a large corporation

  • Design of enterprise-level database systems to support B2B transactions

  • Modeling of business processes
