Executive Development Programs

The Consortium of Universities for International Studies - Paderno del Grappa, Italy

Program Overview

The McIntire School of Commerce and the Consortium of Universities for International Studies (CUI) are offering third-year Commerce students an opportunity to study international business in Paderno del Grappa, Italy, during the 2008 spring semester. CUI offers courses in business, communication, and journalism. Transfer credit is granted through the University of Kansas. The language of instruction is English.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide the essentials of the courses you would have taken at McIntire during this semester, so you will not fall behind your classmates who do not study abroad. The skills you develop and the experiences you have in this program will surely be a very valuable part of your total UVa educational experience. CUI course offerings are extensive, and all Commerce students will find a good selection of courses that interest them. During the term abroad, students must complete 4-5 CUI offerings for 12-15 UVa semester hours. Among those 4-5 courses, Commerce students must complete the UVa-taught "Global Strategy and Value Enhancement" course and at least two other business courses from the pre-approved list. Those three courses will satisfy your Comm 304, 305, and 306 requirements. Finance and Marketing concentrators will be offered a special section of the required Comm 372 and/or Comm 353 in the fall of their fourth year. Additional CUI courses will satisfy appropriate Commerce School or University electives. We recommend that students take at least one non-Commerce offering such as an Italian language course.

NOTE: UVa accepts transfer credit (not grades) for courses taken abroad; however, a course must receive a C or better to transfer credit back to UVa.

Application Process

Online applications are available on the ISO Web site and are due Sept. 24, 2007. If space is available, additional applications will be approved on a rolling basis until Oct. 15, 2007. Once admission is approved, students will be required to complete a CUI application packet and attend several orientation sessions during the months of November and December.

Housing

Students will live in dormitories on campus. You may have a double or a single (for a small additional fee). All rooms have a private bath en suite. Dining at the school will be in the cafeteria. Note: Housekeeping is included for an additional fee (see Web site noted below for fees).

Degree Requirements

Any non-business course will transfer as elective hours and satisfy non-Commerce elective credits. Any student needing specific non-Commerce courses for minors or majors in the College must get departmental approval prior to going abroad.

NOTE: Courses may not be used to satisfy more than one requirement.  For example, a course may not be taken to satisfy the Comm 304, 305, or 306 core requirement and also be used as a concentration or elective requirement. The only fourth-year concentration requirements that may be taken before completion of the third-year core are for international business. Other business courses will transfer back as Comm 300X electives.

This program is a direct-enroll program, with tuition being paid to CUI. Additional information and details about the CUI program can be found on the CUI Web site.
