Executive Development Programs

IEP: Sciences Po
Paris, France

Program Overview

The McIntire School of Commerce and IEP: Sciences Po are offering third-year Commerce students an opportunity to study international business in Paris during the 2008 spring semester. Sciences Po is one of the most famous and highly rated universities in all of France. With a strong tradition in political science, the international business courses at Sciences Po have a strong flavor of international affairs. Many courses are offered in English, but you must take at least a French language course during your semester at Sciences Po.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide the essentials of the courses you would have taken at McIntire during this semester, so you will not fall behind your classmates who do not study abroad. The skills you develop and the experiences you have in this program will surely be a very valuable part of your total UVa educational experience. IEP course offerings are extensive and all Commerce students will find a good selection of courses that interest them. During the term abroad, students must complete 4-6 IEP offerings for 12-18 UVa semester hours. Among those 4-6 courses, Commerce students must complete the UVa-taught "Global Strategy and Value Enhancement" course and at least two other business courses from the pre-approved list. Those three courses will satisfy your Comm 304, 305 and 306 requirements. Finance and Marketing concentrators will be offered a special section of the required Comm 372 and/or Comm 353 in the fall of their fourth year. Additional IEP courses will satisfy appropriate Commerce School or University electives. All students are required to take a French language course.

NOTE: UVa accepts transfer credit (not grades) for courses taken abroad; however, a course must receive a C or better to transfer credit back to UVa.

Application Process

Online applications are available on the ISO Web site and are due Sept. 25, 2007. If space is available, additional applications will be approved on a rolling basis until Oct. 15, 2007. Once admission is approved, students will be required to complete a ABS application packet and attend several orientation sessions during the months of November and December.

Housing

Students will live in apartments; there are no dormitories. Sciences Po will offer lists of housing contacts, but many McIntire students find their own housing using the Internet.

Academic Calendar Spring 2008

Feb. 18-29 French orientation
March 3 Classes begin
April 26-May 4 Spring break
June 19 Classes end
June 20-30 Final exams

NOTE: There is ample time for travel during breaks or before the semester begins; however, classes and exams end later than at UVa.

Degree Requirements

Any non-business course will transfer as elective hours and satisfy non-Commerce elective credits. Any student needing specific non-Commerce courses for minors or majors in the College must get departmental approval prior to going abroad.

NOTE: Courses may not be used to satisfy more than one requirement. For example, a course may not be taken to satisfy the Comm 304, 305, or 306 core requirement and also be used as a concentration or elective requirement. The only fourth-year concentration requirements that may be taken before completion of the third-year core are for international business. Other business courses will transfer back as Comm 300X electives.

This program is an exchange program, with tuition being paid to UVa. Additional information and details about this program can be found on the IEP Web site.
