Executive Development Programs

Madrid, Spain, Campus
Syracuse University

Program Overview

The McIntire School of Commerce and Syracuse University are offering third-year Commerce students an opportunity to study international business in Madrid, Spain, during the 2008 spring semester. Syracuse University has the leading study-abroad campus in Madrid and the widest range of courses to choose from in Spanish and English. The language of instruction is English.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide the essentials of the courses you would have taken at McIntire during this semester, so you will not fall behind your classmates who do not study abroad. The skills you develop and the experiences you have in this program will surely be a very valuable part of your total UVa educational experience. Madrid course offerings are extensive, and all Commerce students will find a good selection of courses that interest them. During the term abroad, students must complete 4-5 Madrid offerings for 12-15 UVa semester hours. Among those 4-5 courses, Commerce students must complete the UVa-taught "Global Strategy and Value Enhancement" course and at least two other business courses from the pre-approved list. Those three courses will satisfy your Comm 304, 305, and 306 requirements. Finance and Marketing concentrators will be offered a special section of the required Comm 372 and/or Comm 353 in the fall of their fourth year. Additional Madrid courses will satisfy appropriate Commerce School or University electives. All students must take at least 3 credits of Spanish language instruction at the appropriate level, although exceptions (by petition) may be made for students who have passed an advanced Spanish language usage class.

NOTE: UVa accepts transfer credit (no grades) for courses taken abroad; however, a course must receive a C or better to transfer credit back to UVa.

Application Process

Online applications are available on the ISO Web site and are due Sept. 24, 2007. If space is available, additional applications will be approved on a rolling basis until Oct. 15, 2007. Once admission is approved, students will be required to complete a Madrid application packet and attend several orientation sessions during the months of November and December.

Housing

Students will be placed with host families to maximize their cultural immersion (one to two students per family).

Academic Calendar Spring 2008

Jan. 5-9 Depart NYC for selected study tour courses
Jan. 23 Classes begin
March 29-April 6 Spring break (Some courses include required study tours that take place at the beginning of the break period. Students should not schedule personal travel until they know when they may be required to take part in a class-related trip.)
May 9 Program ends

Degree Requirements

Any non-business course will transfer as elective hours and satisfy non-Commerce elective credits. Any student needing specific non-Commerce courses for minors or majors in the College must get departmental approval.

NOTE: Courses may not be used to satisfy more than one requirement. For example, a course may not be taken to satisfy the Comm 304, 305, and 306 Core requirement and also be used as a concentration or elective requirement. The only fourth-year concentration requirements that may be taken before completion of the third-year Core are for international business. Other business courses will transfer back as Comm 300X electives.

This program is a direct-enroll program, with tuition being paid to Syracuse. Additional information and details about the Madrid program can be found on the Syracuse/Madrid Web site.
