Admission Process

Applying for graduate studies is a two-part process.

Step 1: Learn as much as you can about the MS in the Management of IT program.

We invite you to take advantage of the following online admissions services to help you learn more about what makes the University of Virginia and the McIntire School of Commerce an ideal environment for graduate studies:

  • Review the Web site for program information and admissions requirements.

  • Request information. We encourage you to request a hardcopy of our program brochure and to register for our e-newsletter that will keep you posted on admissions and financial aid deadlines.

  • Attend an information session. Faculty and admissions representatives are on hand during information sessions to provide an overview of the program in a small group setting and to answer questions you may have about the program. Locations vary throughout the mid-Atlantic region, with on-line chat versions available for those outside of the region.

  • Visit a class. Class Visit Days offer the opportunity to experience firsthand McIntire's unique classroom environment, meet with current students, and interview with a member of the admissions committee.

Step 2: Help us get to know you.

Ideal candidates for graduate study at the McIntire School of Commerce have much to share and much to gain from becoming part of the program. The application process is your opportunity to share information with the admissions committee that will allow them to assess your academic potential, professional background, personal qualities, and motivations for applying to the program. What unique contributions do you feel you could make as a member of the incoming class?

  • Schedule an interview. Interviews are strongly encouraged but are not a required part of the admissions process. They offer you an opportunity to highlight your unique qualifications for the program as well as discuss any of your individual questions or concerns.

  • Submit a completed application. We strongly encourage you to use our online application. It allows you to check the status of your application via the Web and submit references online and reduces the time it takes to get an admissions decision. If you choose to submit a paper-based application, you may contact Cathy Fox directly with your request.

  • Track your application status online. Once you have submitted your application online, you may closely monitor its progress to make sure all of the necessary documents are received by the deadline. The web status feature allows you to see if your references or transcripts have arrived, when your application is completed and ready to forward to the admissions committee for review and will even notify you when a decision has been made.

Requesting Waivers

GMAT Waivers. Applicants who have not previously submitted a GMAT and who have 8+ years of progressively responsible, professional work experience, at least some of which includes the successful management of an IT project, product, team, or resource, may wish to apply for a GMAT waiver. Please submit your request by letter or email along with your current resume and copy of your undergraduate transcript (and any relevant graduate work) to the Graduate Admissions Office. Requests are typically processed within 2 weeks. Waivers are granted when it is deemed that the admissions committee will have enough relevant information on the applicant to render a decision without the addition of a GMAT score. Waivers or denial of a waiver request does not impact upon the committee's final admissions decision. Admissions decisions are only made on review of complete application packages.

TOEFL Waivers. International students whose first language is not English but who have had recent experience that required extensive use of both written and oral English language skills may submit by post or email a written request for a waiver.

Reapplying

Prospective students who have received an admissions decision within the past year, whether favorable or not, are eligible to complete a shortened version of the application to be reconsidered.

Reapplication requires that you complete the following sections:  Personal Information, Program Information, Residency, Employment, Resume, Essays, Supplemental Questions, Honor Statement and submit a new application fee. If your initial decision was not favorable, we encourage you to also submit documentation that strengthens your application. For example, if your academic profile was not strong, you may wish to submit new GMAT scores or transcripts from new coursework completed. If your professional experience was weak, you may wish to submit evidence of new professional responsibilities that you have undertaken.

Deadlines

Admission to the program is competitive, and space in the program is limited. It is to your advantage to apply well in advance of the final March 15 deadline. The early decision deadline is Sept. 15, 2007. Regular admission deadlines are Oct. 15, Nov. 15, Dec. 15,  Jan. 15, Feb. 15, and March 15.  Applicants are normally notified of a decision within four weeks of each deadline. Applications received after the second week of April will be reviewed only if space remains available.

International Applicants

An International applicant is anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident at the time of application to the University of Virginia. International applicants should submit their application as early as possible to allow ample time to apply for a student visa if admitted. We strongly recommend that international applicants apply before the December 15 deadline.

The McIntire School of Commerce requires a professional credential evaluation for all transcripts/mark sheets from international colleges or universities. Please have your official transcripts/mark sheets sent directly to a professional credentialing service for review. Photocopies and facsimiles of transcripts are not acceptable. A notarized copy of transcripts does not serve as an official academic record. If official transcripts are not available, graduation and degree certificates indicating the class or quality of degree, and mark sheets including maximum marks obtainable must be submitted to the credentialing service for evaluation. A copy of the evaluation report must be sent from the credentialing service to the McIntire School of Commerce.
