Below is the suggested course of study for your first two years at the University if you plan to apply to the McIntire School of Commerce. 

The course of study names specific UVA courses, but course descriptions should help students at other institutions select courses that meet McIntire requirements. If you are currently enrolled at another institution, it is strongly recommended that you complete all prerequisites. 

A minimum of 54 hours to include the following courses must be completed before entering the McIntire School of Commerce:

  • The Admissions Committee recommends that all required courses be taken for a letter grade.
  • Equivalents or substitutions of any prerequisites taken at the University or elsewhere should be approved in advance with the appropriate department and the McIntire Office of Student Services, Robertson Hall 311.
  • Humanities and foreign language requirements as defined in the Record, College of Arts & Sciences. Three additional hours of humanities will be required before graduation and may be taken either before or after entering the McIntire School.
  • The McIntire School will accept the same AP credit, course waivers, or exemptions as other school at the University of Virginia. Echols Scholars are NOT exempt on the basis of Echols standing alone.
  • After admission, foreign language prerequisites may, with prior approval, be completed by transfer during the summer prior to enrollment, but must be completed before entering the School.
  • Students planning to concentrate in IT or Finance are encouraged to take at least one course in computer programming (High school AP or higher) in a language such as Visual Basic, Java, C++ or C#.  Suggested courses at UVA include CS 1020 and CS 1110.
  • Students planning to concentrate in Finance are strongly encouraged to complete additional elective coursework in mathematics, particularly if they received AP or transfer credit for the math requirement.
  • Students are encouraged to take courses that emphasize oral and written communication skills as well as courses that emphasize moral reasoning and ethics.

Admission Advising

The McIntire Student Services Office holds walk-in hours each week in Robertson Hall, Room 311 for students interested in applying to McIntire's B.S. in Commerce Program.

The admissions process for UVA students to apply to the McIntire School of Commerce for fall 2012 has ended. The admissions process for UVA students to apply to the McIntire School for the 2013-2014 academic year will begin in mid-November 2012. The application will be available (online only) at that time.

The application process is managed by the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Applications are due in March of each year for the upcoming fall semester.
