Student Trips

Student trips to New York, geared toward finance, advertising, and marketing concentrators, are organized by Commerce Career Services and take place in early January, during the winter break. All students must submit a letter of intent and a resume for participation consideration.
Eligibility
The UVA Finance Trip to New York City is open to all UVA students. The New York Advertising and the New York Marketing student trips are organized for McIntire students with respective marketing/advertising concentrations. Information regarding the trips, with instructions on how to apply, is e-mailed to McIntire students (and UVA students for the finance trip) in early November.
Description
During the annual UVA Finance Trip to New York City, third-year UVA students visit a variety of New York finance firms. Banks visited in the past include Greenhill & Co.; Wells Fargo Securities; Sagen Advisors Inc., Moelis & Company; Credit Suisse; Morgan Stanley; Bank of America Merrill Lynch; Citi; J. P. Morgan; Jefferies & Company, Inc.; UBS; Houlihan Lokey; Barclays Capital; and Evercore Partners.
A final list of hosting companies is announced as soon as arrangements are finalized before the trip. In addition to site visits, a networking event with New York alumni is planned.
Benefits of Participation
- Hear from employers, alumni/employees at site visits
- Tour the facility (when appropriate)
- Learn more about the different areas within an investment bank (research, sales, and trading)
- See a typical work setting
Expectations
You must be prepared to ask questions and show a genuine interest in these career fields. Those in attendance are expected to:
- Act and dress professionally
- Show up for ALL visits ON TIME
- Attend each and every scheduled employer visit
Lodging
Students are responsible for all expenses, including personal travel, meal costs, and accommodations. The University assumes no liability for students’ travel and stay in New York. However, students are encouraged to pair up and find hotel rooms or stay with friends/family in the city.
Application Process
Students from the McIntire School, the School of Engineering, and the College of Arts & Sciences are eligible to apply. This annual trip has become extremely popular over the years, and we try to limit participation to 40 third-year students with a serious interest in a finance career and a desire to experience New York firsthand.
When the application process is opened (usually in early November), students must submit a resume and a letter of interest describing why they believe they are a strong candidate for this opportunity. The letter should include information about the student’s personal goals, academic achievements, and work and leadership experience. Students should also include their date of birth in the letter of interest; some events will serve alcohol, and students will be required to provide their age before the events.
We always expect a large number of applications for this trip; however, we must limit the number of students accepted to participate. Our goal is to allow as many students as possible, but the decision will be based on the resume and letter of interest.
