Interviewing
A job interview allows the employer and interviewee to determine whether a fit exists. Interviewees must understand they are interviewing the employer as much as the employer is interviewing them. Most important, interviewees must be prepared and practice their interviewing skills. Interviewees should first be able to:
- Elaborate on why they want the job or internship
- Explain why they are a good fit
- Use concrete examples and past behaviors to illustrate their answers
- Explain why they want to work for that particular employer
- Explain why that industry fits with their career goals
There are several types of interviews:
To read more about each type of interview, please refer to our handouts.
We suggest practicing your interview skills by meeting with a career counselor and/or employer.
You can:
- Make an appointment or mock interview with a career counselor by stopping in or calling the CCS front desk.
- Participate in the Employer-in-Residence Program by conducting a mock interview with an employer representative.
- You can also practice in front of a mirror or with a friend. The most important point is to PRACTICE and be PREPARED!
"From conducting mock interviews, to proofreading cover letters, to helping me network with alumni and employers, CCS went above and beyond to make the recruiting process a success for me. I came in with no idea what I wanted to do as a career, and came out with a job that I couldn't be more excited about.
McIntire's biggest strength is its outstanding faculty. Not only are the professors incredibly knowledgeable about their subject matter, but they actively work to build relationships with the students. They are always rooting us on to do our best, and always doing whatever it takes to help us succeed." Jamie Giam (McIntire '12)
