Networking

Did you know that up to 80% of jobs are filled by word of mouth? This means they are never even advertised. Therefore, it is VERY important to network and conduct informational interviews. To learn more, read the networking handouts.
You can network with:
- Relatives
- Friends
- Neighbors
- Community members
- Faculty
- Alumni
An excellent resource to connect with alumni is HoosOnline/UCAN (University Career Assistance Network), a collection of information and password-protected networking services for UVA alumni, students, faculty, and friends. HoosOnline hosts University Career Assistance Network (UCAN), a group of more than 23,000 UVA alumni who volunteer as career resource contacts for other alumni and students. UCAN provides contact information, career advice, and guidance regarding contacting alumni. Simply register at www.hoosonline.virginia.edu and follow up with an email to hoosonline@virginia.edu, stating your name and e-mail ID and requesting full access to search for UCAN contacts. When you have full access, you can log in and click “Career Resources” and then “Search the UCAN Network” under option 2.
