Agenda

~A Professional Development Offering from CMIT: Emerging Technology Seminar Series~

November 2, 2001

In today’s world of complex information systems, corporations are realizing faster time-to-market and lower development costs by purchasing their middleware from a server-side platform vendor.   Such a vendor provides a robust underlying commerce platform that enables developers to craft efficient, scalable, maintainable, and multi-user secure commerce systems.

Today, there are two prominent choices for a server-side platform: COM+/.NET from Microsoft Corp. and the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) from Sun Microsystems.  Our seminar will explore, compare, and contrast these frameworks and the needs they serve.  We will focus specifically on the aspect of building server-side systems as web services using these components and the respective architectures.

We will also examine the various technical and business aspects of e-commerce (B2C) for the IT manager.  We will analyze how to select the software, hardware, and hosting service that will best address an organization’s needs.  We will study how to manage outsourcing, traffic, order processing, fulfillment, and consultants/vendors in this endeavor.  We will consider more technical aspects, such as connecting databases to off-the-shelf e-commerce software and network infrastructure.  We will also summarize the possibilities for electronic payments, security concerns, and related business issues in this emerging area.

Seminar objectives:

·      Participants will emerge with an understanding of each of the frameworks and their applicability in the current business climate; and

·      Participants will develop a solid understanding of how these architectures compare and will be empowered to make intelligent decisions as IT leaders regarding new web services initiatives.

The seminar is $750.00/person and $500/person for McIntire Corporate Partners. To register for the seminar, please RSVP to Kathy Alderson at 434-924-7010 or kja5y@virginia.edu.  Payment arrangements need to be made at the time of registration.
