Symposium Summary

SYMPOSIUM THEME

McIntire’s 2001 Spring Symposium is co-sponsored by the Center for Growth Enterprises, the Real Estate Center at the University of Virginia, and the Center for the Management of Information Technology.  Creating and Sustaining Visionary Organizations” will address issues of sustained greatness, building on the keynote presentation by Jim Collins, noted management educator, researcher, and author.  In Built to Last (Harper Business, 1994), Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras described a six-year research project that opened a window on sustained corporate greatness or, using their term, visionary firms.  Their book had over 40 printings in 13 languages and achieved best-seller status on three continents.

Collins followed this insightful research with a four-year study assessing the transformation of “good to great” firms.  During the morning session of the symposium, he will present key findings from both studies.  After this address, Mr. Collins will moderate a panel discussion with the following senior executives: Macon F. Brock, CEO of Dollar Tree Stores, Michael D. Parker, President of The Dow Chemical Company, James S. Turley, Chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young, and Jeffrey C. Walker, Managing Partner of J. P. Morgan Partners.

In the afternoon session, the symposium will focus on the role of information technology in transforming organizations from “good to great.” Ryan Nelson, Director of the Center for the Management of Information Technology, will moderate a panel discussion with the following senior IT executives:  Dennis Bowman, CIO of Circuit City, and Carl Wilson, CIO of Marriott International.
