DESCRIPTION

Feedback from both advanced accounting students and accounting professionals suggests that undergraduates do not always fully grasp the broad range of activities performed by business people with formal training in accounting. Unfortunately, this issue, coupled with other challenges, has resulted in a decline in interest in the accounting field. This program demonstrated the interesting and challenging career possibilities open to those with formal accounting education. The session entailed presentations by and a facilitated panel discussion of accounting professionals, including Edward J. Mazur, Vice President of Administration and Finance of Virginia State University, who was the first Controller of the United States and is a member of the Government Accounting Standards Board, and Jane Watkins, CEO of the Virginia Credit Union. Panelists were invited to present their perspectives on the impact of accounting education on their professional career as well as address participant questions.
