DESCRIPTION

Over the past three years, the e-business consulting arena has witnessed dramatic change. With dot-com insurgency came not only the rapid proliferation of new firms with advice on how to leverage the Internet but also difficulties in attracting and retaining consultants in the face of promising stock options. Dot-com failures, a slowing economy, roll-outs of e-business services by veteran firms, and plummeting valuations of pure-play upstarts are currently causing an industry shakeout. Small players, and even bigger firms, are laying off employees, closing offices, and battling for engagements while prospects are waiting out the slipping economy. Whereas some claim that the e-business consulting hype is over, others argue that helping clients use the Internet to reinvent their processes will continue to drive consulting.

Given these dynamics and the recent popularity of e-business consulting careers, the e-business consulting panel was designed to introduce interested McIntire undergraduates, graduates, and faculty to e-business consulting trends, work, firm differences, and career considerations through a facilitated panel discussion of e-business consultants and industry experts from Accenture, Booz Allen Hamilton, CapTech Ventures, CSC Consulting, Dominion Digital, Kurt Salmon Associates, and Sapient. Panelists were invited to present their perspectives on these topics as well as address participant questions. An informal social gathering followed the panel for panelists and participants interested in further dialogue. Program participation included Comm 466 students, members of the McIntire Consulting Group, members of the Information Technology Group, M.S. in MIT Program participants, as well as other interested University and McIntire students and faculty.
