Center for Innovation in Professional Services
As we move further into the knowledge economy, many leading companies and government agencies have initiated programs to facilitate the creation and transfer of knowledge. Early efforts focused heavily on the implementation of distributed technologies and were largely met with less success than had been hoped for¾despite extensive investments of time, effort, and money on the part of the organizations. More recently, these organizations have made organizational and technical shifts in how they operate to more holistically address the organizational context within which knowledge creation and sharing occur. In many cases these are dramatic shifts in the way we think about strategy, management, and organizing. Given these dynamics and the concern most executives have with managing knowledge effectively, a select group of distinguished speakers presented a variety of approaches that organizations have taken to more effectively manage knowledge and expertise. Speakers included Nancy Dixon, author of Common Knowledge: How Companies Thrive by Sharing What They Know; Alex Bennet, recent CIO of the Navy; Ann Noles, Chief Knowledge Officer of Capital One; and Mike Fontaine and Eric Lesser from IBM’s Institute for Knowledge-Based Organizations. This program engaged to up to 100 knowledge management and systems analysis and design students as well as interested McIntire faculty.
