Areas of Expertise:

Professor Ballinger has expertise in executive succession, leadership, and emotions. His current research focuses on the role executive and managerial turnover plays in the future composition and performance of work groups. He also has expertise in succession planning, leadership, and leadership development gained through research, teaching, and coaching leaders at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels in the United States and Germany.

Professional Activities:

Professor Ballinger is conducting a research program investigating how disruptions in succession processes lead to negative outcomes for work groups and corporations. As part of this, he has begun a program investigating the causes and consequences of employment of interim CEOs in executive succession episodes. His work also involves investigating the role of emotional reactions to leadership succession events in changes in individual work attitudes and performance outcomes in both the boardroom and the workplace. He is also continuing research in employee reactions to invasions of privacy in the workplace, particularly in the role of monitoring of Internet use on the job. He is actively collaborating with colleagues at the University of Virginia, Purdue University, National University of Singapore, and George Mason University. He is a member of the editorial review boards of Academy of Management Review and Organization Science and a member of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition, Organizational Behavior, and Research Methods divisions of the Academy of Management. Professor Ballinger has taught courses in leadership, organizational behavior, and human resources management at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels in the United States and in Germany.

Before starting his academic career, Professor Ballinger had experience in project management as well as the evaluation and administration of a call center and grant programs operated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, gained through work at Aspen Systems Corporation and FirstPic Inc.
