Smith Professor of Commerce Office phone: 434-924-3848 Education: D.B.A., Operations Research, University of Maryland Areas of Expertise: Professor Smith specializes in the application of information technology to the solution of operational and strategic problems of management. Such solutions have required the development of comprehensive data views of enterprise operations. His current research in this area is centered on radiofrequency identification technologies and their application to industrial and retail supply chains. This work follows extensive research on the general problem of enterprise system integration, XML-based services architectures, and the operational visibility such technologies offer management problem solving. His prior work ranges from economic modeling and simulation of transportation and logistics systems to application of pattern recognition and optimization techniques to large financial databases. Design, development, and use of databases have been at the core of Professor Smith’s work. His undergraduate courses include database management and business software development. His recent graduate course topics include IT architectures, technology visioning, object-oriented systems, enterprise systems integration, and supply chain management. Professional Activities: Professor Smith has presented papers and published articles on the application of computers and mathematical models to a wide range of management problems.
