Course-by-Course Credential Evaluation

The McIntire School of Commerce requires a professional credential evaluation for all transcripts from international colleges or universities. Please have your official transcripts sent directly to a professional credentialing service for review. A copy of the evaluation report must be sent from the credentialing service to the McIntire School of Commerce. Photocopies and facsimiles of transcripts are not acceptable. A notarized copy of transcripts does not serve as an official academic record.

English Language Test

International students whose native language is not English must also submit additional test scores. Either IELTS or TOEFL are acceptable.

  • TOEFL scores must be sent to McIntire School of Commerce, code 5829. Do not select the generic UVA code, as there is a specific code for the McIntire School of Commerce. To be competitive, your score must be a minimum of 600 (paper based), 250 (online) or 100 (ibt). To learn more about the TOEFL or to schedule a test, visit ETS.

  • IELTS scores must be sent to the McIntire School of Commerce. To be competitive, your overall score should be a minimum of 7. To learn more about the IELTS or to schedule a test, visit IELTS.

International students who have received their undergraduate degree from an institution whose official language of instruction was English may request consideration for a waiver of this requirement. Written requests should be sent by mail to the Graduate Programs office or by email to mscommerce@virginia.edu.

 Foreign Student Advisor Report (FSA)

International students already enrolled in a U.S. college or university must complete and submit the Foreign Student Advisor Report (FSA) to transfer student visa sposorship to the University of Virginia. Complete this form and send to the McIntire Graduate Programs Office, attention Emma Candelier (address above).

Transitioning to the University

English for Academic Purposes

We strongly recommend all international students consider taking advantage of a summer language institute offered by the University of Virginia. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is an intensive language and culture course designed for non-native speakers of English who have been admitted to an undergraduate or graduate degree program at the University. Participants fine tune the language skills required for success in U.S. higher education through exercises in academic writing, academic reading and vocabulary development, listening comprehension and note taking, classroom discussion strategies, and presentation skills. Throughout the EAP program, participants work with content from their intended field of study or research.

 Language Consultant Program

Student language consultants are native speakers of English who are interested in getting to know international students, staff, and scholars. Once you arrive at the University, they offer you the opportunity to practice your English, learn more about U.S. culture, and make new friends. Most conversation groups will consist of one student language consultant and 1-2 international students, staff, or scholars. Conversation groups meet 1 hour per week beginning in September until the last week of classes for the fall semester. To learn more contact the Center for American English Language and Culture at 434-924-3372 or caelc@virginia.edu.
