The dedication of the McIntire faculty to developing students with the insight and tools for world-class leadership emerges not only from a commitment to rigorous research but also from a longstanding heritage of student-centered learning that brings the best of both theory and practice to the McIntire classroom.  

Faculty Fellowship
Your endowed gift of $500,000 provides an annual $25,000 merit-based grant for a faculty member to pursue scholarly work during the summer. These supplemental funds are offered to McIntire’s most promising and productive faculty through the School’s annual review process. Each year, faculty members are chosen to receive these fellowships, allowing McIntire to acknowledge its top scholars. In addition, these fellowships are crucial in attracting and retaining the best and brightest teachers and researchers in an increasingly competitive global job market. 

Emerging Scholar Professorship
Your endowed gift of $1 million provides $50,000 annually to help attract and retain the most promising young scholars in their field at a time when additional salary and research support are critical to their recruitment. These three- to five-year term professorships provide a bridge between the start of a scholar’s career and the time at which they become eligible for a permanent, fully endowed professorship. An Emerging Scholar Professorship is essential for the School to build a solid faculty foundation that will serve our students for many years.

The Eminent Scholar Professorship
An endowed professorship is one of the greatest honors the School can bestow on a faculty member. Combining prestige and financial rewards, it recognizes and enhances a scholar’s professional reputation. Your endowed gift of $3 – 5 million provides $150,000+ annually to the support of this Eminent Scholar, enabling the School to pursue its missions of world-class teaching and research and the development of new courses. An Eminent Scholar will shape the curricula, attract and mentor other outstanding faculty, and increase student awareness of career opportunities. In addition, the Scholar will develop an innovative, ambitious research agenda and communicate the results to industry professionals. Eminent Scholar Professorships position McIntire and the University at the forefront of a particular discipline and reinforce the School’s standing as one of the nation’s innovators in business education.

The Research Initiative Partnership:
Sustaining Scholarship in Education and Business

In today’s complex, fast-paced business climate, the advance of knowledge through innovative and rigorous research is vital to any business school’s mission. McIntire seeks to achieve a position of global preeminence among its peer institutions and will achieve that in part by significantly enhancing our contribution to business knowledge and innovation through applied research.

McIntire faculty members have received numerous awards for their research. They also serve as members of editorial review boards and as editors of leading journals in their fields. In addition, they are regularly invited to present their research at universities, business schools, and corporate settings worldwide.

Research Initiative Partnership
The Research Initiative Partnership is a three-year funding opportunity at $25,000 annually. The Partnership provides consistent, multi-year research funding for several faculty within an area. Corporate support builds intellectual capital through funding research and the presentation of programs on pioneering knowledge and business practices. Faculty Research Partners can direct funding toward a particular academic area.  

Faculty Research Partners receive recognition for their support of faculty research at multiple levels: in the industry and academic communities through publication acknowledgements, and among faculty, students, alumni, and friends at the University of Virginia through the McIntire Corporate Partners Program.

Supporting faculty research initiatives strengthens the Partner's relationships with individual faculty and can create opportunities for collaborating in areas of mutual interest. When appropriate, faculty can meet with alumni and executives at the Partner company for informal discussions or presentations to build and exchange knowledge. Faculty may also provide Faculty Research Partners with a “first look” at new areas of research exploration. In addition to idea exchange, relationships with faculty will flow back into the classroom, provide visibility, and thereby support the Partner's overall presence on Grounds.

The Importance of Research at McIntire
The cutting-edge knowledge developed and published by McIntire faculty provides students, alumni, and business executives with insight and tools for world-class leadership. Leading research can result in empirical findings and conceptual advances, change decision making frameworks, and have downstream effects on legislation. Research findings also influence curriculum development and the classroom experience. McIntire takes an integrated approach to research and teaching that focuses on important business and organizational issues, drawing on relevant knowledge from business and non-business disciplines. Ultimately, research enhances the overall student experience and contributes valuable knowledge that undergraduates will use in their careers.
