A team of five Commerce and pre-Commerce students—Matthew Davis (McIntire ’11, M.S. in Accounting ’12), Uzair Minhas (A&S ’14), Erik Neighbour (A&S ’14), Warren Resnick (A&S ’14), and Siping Xu (McIntire ’13)—was one of 10 college teams to compete in the national finals of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ ninth annual xTREME Games in January 2012. The competition builds critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills of undergraduate accounting students by challenging them to develop and present solutions to real tax and accounting issues.
More than 4,400 students from 84 colleges competed in five-person teams for the chance to represent their schools at the national level in two divisions: xTAX (short for “Extreme Tax”) and xACT (short for “Extreme Accounting”). The five best in each division advanced to the finals, earning generous cash awards. The McIntire School, along with Bryant University, Binghamton University, Brigham Young University, and the University of South Carolina, participated in the national xTAX finals Jan. 26-27, 2012, in Washington, D.C.
“I’m extremely proud of the students’ presentation and strong finish in the xTREME Games,” said McIntire Accounting Professor and competition faculty adviser Sue Porter. “The judges commented that the students’ solution was thoughtful and well-researched and that the students demonstrated a good understanding of tax strategy. The team’s performance is even more impressive when one considers that four of the team members have not yet had the opportunity to take a tax class.”
The strong performance of the team was recognized when the pre-Commerce students were invited to participate in PwC’s National Leadership Adventure Program, and the McIntire students were offered internships.
PricewaterhouseCoopers launched the xTREME Games in 2002 to increase students’ exposure to professional services and the world of public accounting, and has awarded nearly $2 million in total xTREME prize money to date.
