Madhu Chopra Writing Contest Winners Announced
April 16, 2007—The McIntire School congratulates the winners of the
2007 Madhu Chopra Writing Contest. The first-place winner was Maryann Li
(McIntire ’07) for her poem, “Two Definitions of Success”; the
second-place winner was Tim Bernal (McIntire ’07) for his poem, “The
Suits’ Parade.” Megha Agarwal (McIntire ’08) won third place for her
poem, “A Kickball Game.”
Commerce students were invited to reflect on a special person or
experience at McIntire that has increased their responsibility and
concern for others. Entries were judged on originality, creativity,
self-awareness, and use of language. The winners will receive cash
prizes: first place, $300; second place, $150; and third place, $75.
Madhu Chopra (McIntire ’89) was a dedicated, spiritual Commerce student
tragically killed in the summer of 1988. Madhu’s parents annually
sponsor the writing contest in her memory.
Many thanks to Commerce students who creatively shared their experiences
and to the Chopra family for making the contest possible. The many
essays, poems, and experimental writings received were of an
exceptionally high quality.
Judges included faculty members Lynn Hamilton, Bill Kehoe, Janette Martin,
Marcia Pentz-Harris, and Susan Perry Williams and Student Services’
Jeannine Fields. Special thanks to Jeannine Fields for her valuable help
with the contest.
