Professor Jack Lindgren led his 16-member student advertising team, called Cavalier ADvantage, to a first-place win at the American Advertising Federation (AAF) competition. The April 20, 2001, event brought student teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia to the regional competition in Norfolk, Va. McIntire's winning team goes on in June to compete at the national level in Cleveland.

The AAF competition matches student teams that pitch their creative ideas to a firm. DaimlerChrysler is the company selected for this year's competition and will be among the finalist judges. The Cavalier ADvantage campaign included a professional storybook and several 30- and 15-second television advertisements for DaimlerChrysler.

Dean Carl Zeithaml congratulated the Cavalier ADvantage team, Lindgren, other faculty, parents, and alumni who coached and supported the students as they worked on their winning advertising campaign, "Follow the Leader."

"The concepts and analytics of this campaign are impressive," said Zeithaml, "but the real value of this competition is that it is anchored in the real world. This is one more opportunity for our students to demonstrate that a McIntire education prepares them to hit the ground running."

Lindgren is optimistic about Cavalier ADvantage's placement in the national competition. "I think we have a good chance to be in the top four—that's in a competition of 274 schools nationwide. The DaimlerChrysler selection is a corporate branding case. McIntire is one of only two business schools in the competition, and we have drawn on our strong strategic skills. McIntire last won this competition in 1982, when we had another corporate branding case. This year we may have the edge again."

Lindgren's students will make some minor changes to their presentation for the national competition, where they will present to an audience of hundreds.

"The months of intense work and preparation are behind them," Lindgren said. "The important goal—learning how to prepare an advertising campaign—is already achieved."
