The following organizations are available to McIntire students. McIntire students are also eligible for activities, service, and governmental organizations described in The Colonnades. *The organization is open to non-Commerce students. Alpha Kappa Psi, the first professional fraternity in commerce, has the following objectives: to foster scientific research in the fields of commerce, accounting, and finance; to educate the public to appreciate and demand higher ideals therein; and to promote and advance in institutions of collegiate rank courses leading to degrees in business administration. Members are selected on the basis of scholastic standing and promise of high attainment in business.
Advertising and Marketing Association The Advertising and Marketing Association provides students with the opportunity to learn about the advertising and marketing industries, as well as career paths in various areas of marketing through speakers, panels, and other events throughout the year. Within AMA is the UVA chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF). Each year, AAF participates in a nationwide intercollegiate case competition that offers the opportunity to apply classroom theory in the development of an actual ad campaign, including research, total media plan, and creative planning and execution. All interested students are welcome to participate.
Beta Alpha Psi, a national professional honorary organization, recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the field of financial information and sponsors programs that assist in the development of all students enrolled in the Accounting, Finance, and MIT concentrations. Invitations to membership are extended to qualified third- and fourth-year students.
Beta Gamma Sigma is a national honorary society whose purpose is to encourage and reward scholarship and accomplishment among students of commerce and business administration. Third- and fourth-year Commerce students ranking in the highest 7 and 10 percent, respectively, of their class are eligible.
The Commerce Christian Fellowship shows students how to live out their faith in the business world and connect with other Christians in the Commerce School.
Commerce Council is the student government body within the McIntire School. Its primary functions are to provide student representation to the Dean and to coordinate School-wide student activities, such as:
McIntire Consulting Group educates students about various careers in consulting by working in real-life consulting situations and offering workshops to help students learn and refine case interview techniques.
The Graduate Commerce Council exists to enhance the experience of the students in master's programs at the McIntire School of Commerce. This organization includes all graduate students studying at the McIntire School. The council aims to build a sense of community among graduate commerce students and facilitate interactions with the Charlottesville community. Activities include fall and spring graduation celebrations, football tailgates, trips to landmarks in Charlottesville and the surrounding area including Monticello and Humpback Rock, and various community service events around Charlottesville.
Information Technology Group is involved in activities that respond to members' interests in information technology.
McIntire Investment Institute is one of the few student-run investment institutes in the nation and was started in 1994 with a $100,000 gift from John Griffin (McIntire '85). Its purpose is to teach students about investing by using real money; students handle all investment decisions. Participation in the institute is open to any UVA student.
Sales and Trading Group explores sales and trading through extensive simulations, financial models, and mathematical analyses. It offers members the opportunity to attain an in-depth understanding of sales and trading models.
Women's Business Forum at McIntire Women's Business Forum at McIntire provides an open forum to discuss issues that are unique to gender and to explore the challenges faced in work and family relationships. The group is open to all students.
National Association of Black Accountants National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) is a professional organization of minorities in accounting, auditing, finance, consulting, and information technology. NABA provides a direct link to today's and tomorrow's business leaders. Experience levels range from entrepreneurs and senior executives to staff accountants, providing a unique environment for both leadership and development.
Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda is the world’s largest student business organization, with over a quarter of a million members around the globe. Its mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. UVA Phi Beta Lambda achieves this mission by offering bimonthly meetings on business topics with speakers from throughout the Commerce School, University, and business world; participating in community service and social events; traveling to national conferences; and competing in business competency events for awards and scholarships. There is also an active leadership training program for officers on the local, state, and national levels of the organization. Membership is open to all majors. Socially Responsible Investment Organization The Socially Responsible Investment Organization (SRIO) strives to introduce University students to socially responsible investing and to explore the role of corporate social responsibility in the modern business world. SRIO endeavors to create a forum through which students can interact and network with professionals within the socially responsible investment community as well as with each other. Members of this organization strive to educate students, raise awareness, and build relationships between socially responsible investment firms and University students. Socially Responsible Investment Organization Officers-- 2008-2009 TBD The Society of Non-Traditional Students provides non-traditional McIntire students with extracurricular activities and a network of peers who can provide help with transitioning into the McIntire School. Activities include student and family social events, community service and fundraising, and information presentations. The group is open to any interested student.
