 Undergraduate Advising

Undergraduate Advising

Undergraduate students are required to see their official faculty adviser each semester before course enrollment and are encouraged to seek them out for advice at other times during the year. Upon enrollment at McIntire, each third-year student is assigned to a faculty adviser, who is also a member of that student’s third-year teaching team. Much of the student advising takes place within the third-year core curriculum. In the spring of the third year, students are re-assigned a faculty adviser based on academic areas of interest.

Degree Information

Academic Requirements/Degree Audit

Academic Requirements is a report designed to assist undergraduate students and advisers in the advising process. The Academic Requirements lists all of the courses that students have completed to satisfy requirements or that they are currently enrolled in or plan to enroll in and groups them according to degree, major, minor, and concentration requirements. The Academic Requirements report also shows which requirements still need to be satisfied. You can view your Academic Requirement report by logging into your Student Center account. Under the Student Center Tab, click on “other academics” drop down box, then click on “Academic Requirements” to pull up your Academic Requirements report.

Concentrations

All undergraduate students must declare at least one area of concentration from the six possible areas. Student may declare no more than two concentrations. McIntire students may change or declare an area of concentration once enrolled in the program. You must inform the Student Services Office using a Concentration Change Form  by Oct. 1 (for spring enrollment) or Feb. 15 (for fall enrollment) of any change you are making to your degree information. Many upper-level courses are restricted by concentration, so students should ensure that the correct concentration is listed on ISIS prior course enrollment for the fourth year

Minors or Majors from other Schools at the University

After enrollment at McIntire in the third year, many Commerce students continue to pursue academic interests in disciplines outside business. Many Commerce students complete a major or minor in non-business areas. For example, students interested in international business might complete a second major in Spanish, or students interested in finance might complete a minor in mathematics. This is an excellent way to combine your  personal and professional interests and take advantage of the excellent academic departments at the University. Commerce students may major and/or minor in one subject in the College of Arts & Sciences or another school outside of Commerce. Credits may not be duplicated in the other major or applied toward completion of a minor. Prior permission must be obtained from the chair or director of undergraduate programs of the department in which the student is seeking the major or minor. Students are not required to satisfy the area requirements of the school (department) outside of the Commerce School. You are required to satisfy all of the Commerce School’s prerequisites and degree requirements. In pursuing the above, students will not receive two degrees from the University. They receive a B.S. in Commerce, with a concentration(s) and a minor (or major) appearing as degree information on the official transcript.

Tutoring Services

McIntire’s Office of Student Services coordinates a tutoring program based exclusively on faculty referrals for third-year and M.S. in Commerce students. The University offers tutoring in various subjects, including many of the non-Commerce prerequisites (e.g., economics, statistics). Check the tutoring Web site for additional information, including fees. Beta Alpha Psi offers tutoring in introductory accounting courses. To learn more, visit studentorg.asp for a list of BAPsi officers and their contact information.

Transfer of Credit

Refer to the University Undergraduate Record for specific requirements regarding transfer of credit. McIntire undergraduate students wishing to transfer credit for course work taken after enrollment in the School must receive prior approval from the Office of Student Services.
