Entrepreneurship Experiences

The Galant Center develops and supports a range of experiences beyond the classroom in an effort to introduce students to the undeniably dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon that entrepreneurship truly is.

Spring Break West Coast Trip

The Galant Center and McIntire Career Services previously planned an annual “trek” during spring break to San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The trip introduces students to a range of start-up and technology firms, connects students with alumni, and provides students with a sense of what it is like to live and work in the Bay Area. In 2015, this trek was converted to a course, the Digital Safari, organized by Commerce Career Services and McIntire's Information Technology faculty.

Firms visited on the trek over the years range from nascent start-ups to technology giants, including (in alphabetical order): Accel Partners, Airbnb, Bloom Energy, Capital One Labs, CulinaryEdge, Correlation Ventures, CreditKarma, Equilar, Facebook, Freshplum, Google (and YouTube), HotelTonight, Huckberry, IDEO, Indiegogo, LinkedIn, LiquidSpace, Mozilla, Prezi, Quora, RadiumOne, Salesforce, ShareThis, Socialize, SurveyMonkey, Twitter and Y-Combinator.

Start-Up Trips

During both fall and spring semesters, the Galant Center sponsors the “Start-Up Trips,” organized by the Entrepreneurship Group at U.Va. These trips, ranging from single- to multiple-day excursions, are designed to introduce students to the start-up communities on the East Coast.

Cities visited on these road trips have included New YorkRichmond, and Washington, D.C. Company visits have included BarkBoxBehanceCoffitivityEtsyGilt Group, GoogleLumiaryNectarOPowerSocialRadarSocialTablesUncubed/Wakefield, and 1776.
