London Ivy Society Event with Professor Saonee Sarker
The McIntire Ivy Society cordially invites you to connect with local alumnae in London and meet Saonee Sarker, Professor of Commerce, Area Coordinator—Information Technology, and Rolls-Royce Commonwealth Commerce Professor Monday, 26 February. Details for the small dinner with 8-10 alumnae are being finalized and will be shared soon.
Professor Saonee Sarker welcomes a dialogue with our alumnae on how academia, industry, government, and citizens can come together to harness the power of technology and help solve today’s grand challenges. During this dialogue, she will share her experiences and findings from her research on smart electricity meters and her initial work on smart city adoption and implementation in Europe.
Today’s responsible IT academic should not only strive to educate and shape the minds of the next generation, but also help contribute to an understanding of how rapidly changing technology can address some of the current societal grand challenges (e.g., air pollution in major cities, access to clean water and sanitation, and increasing demands for renewable energy, among others). One specific area may be smart city development, born out of the confluence of technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) and the growing urbanization, which has exposed cities around the world to risks of economic collapse, failure to protect vulnerable groups, poor responses to climate change, and technical and natural disasters (United Nations 2014; World Bank 2015).
About McIntire's Ivy Society: The McIntire Ivy Society is a community of alumnae dedicated to promoting the advancement of McIntire women by fostering collective growth, learning, and networking.
