Professor Black teaches Management Communication, with a focus on persuasion, ethics, and intercultural communication. She also teaches and writes about special topics, including the history of rhetoric and the origins of modern commerce, figures of speech related to the body and waste, and espionage.

Previously, Professor Black was an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, taught at Cornell University, and coached executive MBA students at UVA’s Darden School of Business. She has published award-winning teaching cases; translated business research into popular press articles; and designed education materials for clients including the prison business education program Resilience Education, the leadership coaching platform BetterUp, and the Warrior-Scholar Project. In addition to her work in academia, she has worked in nonprofits, finance, and startups.  

Outside the United States, Professor Black has lived and worked in Italy, South Korea, Poland, Germany, Serbia, England, and France.
