M.S. in Accounting Program 2011 (Tax Consulting Track)
Now: Elliott Davis Decosimo LLC/PLLC, Senior Tax Accountant (Charlotte, NC)
Most memorable class
The most memorable class was Professor Susan Porter’s International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) class, during which we traveled during spring break to Ireland to take part in an IFRS/US GAAP case competition with students from University College of Dublin. We also learned about the culture and history of Ireland. It was a great experience academically, but it was also a lot of fun. It was an experience I will never forget.
Leveraging the M.S. in Accounting degree in the workplace
The M.S. in Accounting curriculum is relevant to the work I do day-to-day at my job. In the tax world, issues come up all time that relate to what I learned while at UVA. In addition, the degree itself carries a lot of weight. I find that other professionals in the community really respect a McIntire degree. As a result, it’s an asset to have on your resume. There's also a great networking community in Charlotte of former McIntire students, and I'm sure this is the case in other large cities as well.
A typical day on the job
I work in our firm's manufacturing and distribution (M&D) and international tax groups, so I work heavily in the corporate arena. On any given day, I may work on preparation or review of a tax return or a tax provision. I work closely with other colleagues in my groups. Throughout the day, I interact quite a bit with clients and help them with various tax questions.
What makes the job great
I enjoy coming to work every day because of my coworkers. At work, we have a great support network and team atmosphere. We actually have some fun while doing taxes!
Advice for future M.S. in Accounting students
Enjoy it as much as you can. Soak up as much as you can from the classes. The professors are wonderful, and there's so much to learn from them. It's an honor to be there and learn from them, so it's important to give it all that you can. I also advise students to have fun! Take time to get to know other students in the Program. I made amazing friends while I was there and had some unforgettable experiences.
Preparation for professional success and leadership in the workplace
I truly believe McIntire helps you become a leader in the accounting profession. The Program challenged me to think critically and solve problems in group settings. You learn the technical skills of accounting, but you also learn about the value of the profession. I think McIntire goes above and beyond other programs.
Favorite Charlottesville activity
While in the Program, I loved visiting the wineries around Charlottesville.
