M.S. in Accounting 2013 (Financial Reporting & Assurance Track)
Now: PricewaterhouseCoopers, Senior Associate, Deals (Chicago, IL)
University of Pittsburgh
Most memorable class
Communication. I apply the simple yet powerful concepts I learned from that class every single day as I communicate with client and colleagues and write due diligence finding reports.
Leveraging the M.S. in Accounting degree in the workplace
My UVA classmates helped me with my career switch from auditing to M&D due diligence two years after I graduated. One connected me with the interview opportunity and another helped guide me through the interview process.
A typical day on the job
We provide financial due diligence (FDD) insights to clients who are going through M&A deals. We help them analyze the quality of historical earnings, review balance sheets and net working capital, and perform trend analyses. A typical day at FDD includes a call or face-to-face meeting with management, using advanced excel and other data analytics tools to analyze financial records, and delivering reports to our clients to communicate our findings.
What makes the job great
I really enjoy getting to know a company from a finance & accounting perspective in three weeks or less, then hopping onto the next deal that could involve companies in a completely different industry. You are always doing something different.
Advice for future M.S. in Accounting students
The UVA M.S. in Accounting Program provides tremendous career opportunity and a great network. Make sure you take advantage of this while at school as well as after you graduate.
Preparation for professional success and leadership in the workplace
Classes are usually either case- or team-based, simulating how things work in the professional service world.
