An article co-authored by Robert Hill Carter Professor of Commerce David Mick, “Mindfulness: Its Transformative Potential for Consumer, Societal, and Environmental Well-Being,” has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 Thomas C. Kinnear Award for outstanding article in Journal of Public Policy and Marketing. The prestigious award, an initiative of the JPPM editorial review board and the publisher, as well as the American Marketing Association, honors the article that makes the most significant contribution to the understanding of marketing and public policy issues during the most recent three-year period.

JPPM is the premier academic and professional journal that examines the interface between marketing and public policy and the functioning and performance of the nation's economy.

First published in September 2016, the article suggests mindfulness as an antidote to mindless consumption, which adversely affects the well-being of not only the individual, but also of society as a whole. Exploring the transformative potential of “being able to see clearly,” the paper offers recommendations to consumers, institutions, and policy makers for promoting mindful consumption, “the practice of paying attention, with acceptance, to internal stimuli (bodily sensations, emotions, and thoughts) and external stimuli and their effects on the consumption process.” Nominated by the JPPM editorial review board and selected by a committee of associate editors, the article was noted as being especially engaging, offering interesting insights into how people may extend a personal practice to important priorities in their lives.

“I’m deeply honored to be part of the team selected for this award. What is especially gratifying is that mindfulness is so timely and timeless,” Mick says, adding that his research into the topic dovetails well with his role as a member of the Contemplative Council at UVA’s Contemplative Sciences Center.

Mick and his co-authors were honored at the 2019 Marketing and Public Policy Conference, held in Washington, D.C., June 6-8, and will be recognized at the 2019 AMA Summer Academic Conference in Chicago Aug. 9-11.
