IT Professor Suprateek Sarker is the recipient of an AIS Fellow Award, one of the Association for Information Systems’ most prestigious awards honoring extraordinary individuals in the information systems community. The awards were presented during a ceremony at the International Conference of Information Systems, in Seoul, South Korea, in December.

The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the information systems discipline in the areas of research, teaching, and service. A Fellow need not have excelled in all three categories; however, she or he is expected to have made exceptional contributions in at least one of these areas and to have made significant contributions in the other two. A Fellow is also expected to have made significant global contributions to the information systems discipline as well as outstanding local contributions in their country and region. Esteemed for their high levels of professional and personal integrity, AIS Fellows act as role models, inspiring colleagues and students.

Sarker, Rolls-Royce Commonwealth Commerce Professor at the McIntire School, previously served as Visiting Distinguished Professor at Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland); as University of London Chair of Technology & Information Management at Royal Holloway (U.K.); as Microsoft Chair at Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), and as Philip Kays Distinguished Professor at Washington State University (U.S.), and has had a number of short-term visiting appointments around the world. He has also served as doctoral dissertation examiner for scholars in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and South Africa.

He has published articles in numerous leading academic journals, including MIS Quarterly; Information Systems Research; Journal of the AIS; and Journal of the MIS. Currently editor-in-chief of Journal of the AIS, Sarker also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of the MIS; IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management; and IT & People, is a former editor-in-chief of Journal of Information Technology Case and Application Research, and a former senior editor of MIS Quarterly and Decision Sciences. In 2006, he was a co-recipient of the Stafford Beer Medal from the Operational Research Society (U.K.) for work on virtual teamwork published in European Journal of Information Systems. Sarker has also earned teaching awards at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as multiple external grants from organizations including the National Science Foundation (NSF). In August 2016, the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) conferred an honorary doctorate on Sarker, who holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Cincinnati.
