Gautam Puranik

Head of Business Strategy and Analytics and Chief Data Officer, CarMax

Gautam Puranik joined CarMax in May 2015 as Vice President, Marketing & Analytics and was promoted to his current role in February 2020. During his time in marketing, Puranik was responsible for advancing marketing strategies and platforms for CarMax and led the marketing consumer insights and analytics teams. Puranik played a key role in establishing CarMax’s digital marketing programs, helped establish CarMax’s important digital experiences like online finance and enabled the company’s push towards becoming a data analytics-driven company. In his current role, Puranik is responsible for driving strategy and analytics for Product, Sales, Operations, Logistics, and HR, with continued involvement in marketing. As CarMax’s first Chief Data Officer, Puranik is also responsible for developing and managing the company’s overall data science and data governance strategy.

Prior to joining CarMax, Puranik served as Vice President, Marketing Strategy and Customer Experience at Capital One, one of his many roles during his time at Capital One. In this role, he led all direct marketing efforts for the card business at Capital One. Puranik has extensive experience in developing and implementing marketing programs and systems designed to meet aggressive growth targets and goals.

Puranik received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pune, India; M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology; and executive education from MIT Sloan School of Management. Puranik is active in the community and currently serves on the boards of Feedmore, Shady Grove YMCA, and The CarMax Foundation.
