Timothy J. Naughton (A&S '83)

Chairman of the Board, AvalonBay Communities

Timothy J. Naughton is the company’s Chairman of the Board. Naughton has served as Chairman since May 2013, served as Chief Executive Officer from January 2012 to January 2022, and has been a director of the Company since September 2005. Naughton’s prior roles include serving as the company’s President, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Investment Officer, and Regional Vice President—Development and Acquisitions. Naughton has been with the company and its predecessors since 1989.

Naughton is a Director of Park Hotels & Resorts Inc., a publicly traded hotel real estate investment trust. He is a former Chairman of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (“NAREIT”). Naughton is also a member of The Real Estate Roundtable, is a member and past chairman of the Multifamily Council of the Urban Land Institute (“ULI”), and is a member of the Real Estate Forum.

He sits on the board of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation at the University of Virginia.

Naughton received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1987 and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
