Larry Kochard

Lecturer of Commerce, McIntire School of Commerce; Former Chief Investment Officer, Makena Capital Management

Larry Kochard recently rejoined the McIntire School of Commerce as an adjunct faculty member, teaching COMM 4780, Institutional Investment Management, in the fall of 2025. Kochard retired at the end of 2024, after a long career in investments, most recently serving as the Chief Investment Officer at multi-asset class investment firm Makena Capital Management. Kochard was previously the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of the University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO). He received the Rodney Adams Endowment Management Award in 2015 from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). Kochard was previously on the faculty at UVA from 1998 to 2004.  

Kochard is an active speaker at investment events, has done several podcasts (two on "Capital Allocators"), and co-authored Foundation and Endowment Investing: Philosophies and Strategies of Top Investors and Institutions, which features interviews of successful Chief Investment Officers (Wiley, 2008).

Kochard has been involved with numerous boards and investment committees. He currently serves on the board of Makena Capital, chairs the investment advisory committee for the Virginia Retirement System, serves on the foundation board and chairs the investment committee for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, serves on the board of Virginia Commonwealth University Investment Management Company, and serves on the investment advisory committee of Eighteen48 Partners.
