The Visiting Research Scholars (VRS) program at McIntire hosts scholars-in-residence interested in serious collaborative work with McIntire faculty. Visiting Research Scholars enrich our academic community and contribute to greater intellectual diversity and the exchange of ideas. Scholars visit McIntire for an average duration of one semester.

Program Overview

The VRS program invites international and domestic research colleagues to join McIntire faculty members for stays at the University of Virginia to collaborate on shared research interests. Stays typically last four months, but VRS candidates may apply for any duration between one month and one year. Scholars are invited to actively engage in the McIntire community during their stay, to include research presentations, participating in School and Area functions, and connecting with colleagues across the School and University. Scholars are eligible for reimbursement of qualified expenses up to $9,000.

Eligibility

Visiting Research Scholars must have an earned Ph.D. and an active research agenda that aligns with or extends those already present among McIntire faculty. VRS candidates must commit to relocate and work in residence from Charlottesville, VA, for the majority of the VRS appointment. To encourage the most engagement with colleagues, priority is given to Scholars applying to visit during either the fall or spring terms, although visits may extend into the summer months if warranted. Potential Scholars are strongly encouraged to first connect with a McIntire faculty member who might serve as their VRS sponsor during the visitation period. Candidates will be expected to list this sponsor, and any additional potential research collaborators, on their application.

Funding

Most VRS candidates will be funded through their home universities, employers, grants, or government programs. The McIntire School will provide reimbursement of up to $9,000 in qualified expenses to include relocation expenses, housing, visa fees (see UVA website for visiting international scholars), research expenses, and a $250 reimbursement allowance for networking with faculty colleagues. Visits shorter than five months will be prorated to $1,800 of reimbursable expenses per month.
