M.S. in Accounting

Ready to work anywhere.

As business becomes more globally connected, accountants are called to work all over the world. McIntire’s elective Global Commerce Immersion (GCI) courses pair on-campus seminars with a stint abroad during the January term or spring break. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the social, economic, and cultural dynamics affecting today’s global business environment.

Belgium and the Netherlands: Sustainability Reporting and Assurance

In this course, students will gain a new perspective into sustainability: the measurement, reporting, and assurance of sustainability measures. Leading up to the trip, students gain an understanding of sustainability reporting through class discussions with experts in the field. You’ll explore more sophisticated initiatives, standards, and legislation surrounding sustainability reporting in Western Europe as compared with other localities. While in Belgium and the Netherlands, you’ll visit a range of companies and industries, including food and beverage, port authorities, Big 4 professional services firms, and policymakers. The program will also include cultural experiences and exploration.

This three-credit elective class* is co-led by accounting professors Andrea Roberts (aar5u@virginia.edu) and Jennifer Winchel (jlw5ad@virginia.edu). It is offered in the spring to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Global Commerce Immersion (GCI) Courses

McIntire's GCI courses (three-credit electives) offer students an in-depth understanding of the complex social, economic, and cultural dynamics affecting today's rapidly changing global business environment. Our world-class faculty, comprehensive global curriculum, and extensive range of global opportunities are designed to ensure that McIntire graduate students can develop the skills they need for a lifetime of international business leadership.

These unique courses include on-campus seminars and a study-abroad component during either the January term or spring break. GCI courses can be topic-specific (e.g., finance or consumer behavior and marketing) or practical (e.g., a consulting project analyzing a specific company’s business problems and opportunities).

All GCI courses are taught and led by McIntire faculty. They are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. An additional cost is associated with each course. Because of space limitations, a limited number of students can enroll.
