Application Process

We take a holistic approach to evaluating your application, so it is important to present a well-rounded view of your academics, experiences, and motivation. We encourage you to start an application early, review the essay questions in advance, choose recommenders, and collect required information. You may access the application at any time and make changes before submitting it for official review. The process has been streamlined to allow you to apply to the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce, Esade Business School, and Lingnan (University) College with one application. Once submitted, you will be unable to make further changes to your application.

Your complete application will include the components detailed below.

Essay Prompts
  • Required: Describe your short-term and long-term visions for your post-M.S. in Global Commerce career path. What is it about the M.S. in Global Commerce Program that you think will help you reach your goals? (500-word limit)
  • Required: Please provide a response to one of the following questions in order to help the Admissions Committee understand your global mindset and the attributes/competencies you consider crucial to master in order to succeed in a diverse environment (personal, academic and professional career). (500-word limit)
    • Which country/culture do you consider the most different from your own? Why? If you were sent there, how would you adapt? How would you help somebody from that country to adapt to your own country/culture?
    • What attributes and competencies do you consider crucial to success in managing diversity in the corporate world? How are those different from the ones you would use in your personal life?
    • Share with us a significant experience you have had outside of your comfort zone. How did you react? What was the most positive aspect of the experience, and the worst?
Test Requirements

The GMAT or GRE is required for admission to the M.S. in Global Commerce program.  There are no minimum scores required and your score will be viewed within the context of your complete application. A limited number of GMAT test fee waivers are available for those with documented financial need. 

If you have, or expect to have, an undergraduate degree from a college or university outside of the U.S. and English is not your native language, you will need to submit a valid TOEFL or IELTS score. To be competitive, your TOEFL score must be a minimum of 100 (iBT), or a minimum overall band score of 7.5 for IELTS. Candidates whose primary language is not English and who have completed an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university that included a minimum of two years of residency in the U.S. are not required to provide a TOEFL or IELTS score. The admission committee reserves the right to request additional verification of English language proficiency that could include specific coursework or TOEFL or IELTS testing.

IELTS: Electronic IELTS scores must be submitted to our Electronic Download account directly by the IELTS test center. Please provide the following information to the test center when requesting your scores:

Transcripts or Credential Evaluation

Upload unofficial copies of transcripts from every college or university you have attended. Please redact your SSN or National ID before uploading unofficial transcripts. Applicants who are offered admission must arrange for your official/final transcript to be forwarded to Esade Business School (specific instructions will be provided prior to matriculation).

Students who completed coursework outside of the United States must submit a professional course-by-course credential evaluation of their official transcripts. This evaluation must be performed by a professional credential evaluator, with the report sent directly from the evaluator to the McIntire School of Commerce either electronically or to one of the addresses below. (Note: This requirement does not apply to students attending U.S. institutions who completed coursework outside of the United States as part of a study-abroad program.)

Letters of Recommendation

Request two letters of recommendation. At least one recommender must be someone who has taught you in an academic environment and can attest to your academic abilities. The online application allows you to add each recommender's name and contact information. They will receive and submit an online recommendation form. Once submitted, it will attach automatically to your file and you will receive confirmation.

Application Submission and Fee Payment

Pay the $75 non-refundable application fee online by credit card (American Express, Discover, or Mastercard) or by e-check. Once an application has been submitted, you will not be able to make changes.

Track Your Application

You can track your application's progress by logging into the application. Candidates are encouraged to keep copies of all admissions materials for their personal files. Every attempt will be made to review applications within the requested evaluation period (round). However, incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Missing documentation may result in holding an application until a later round.

Interview

If you have been selected for an interview, the Graduate Admissions Office will notify you.
